What Others Say About FWRAP?

  • "Family WRAP gave my husband and myself a well defined road map on how to stay the course for the best way to assist our family in dealing with all the facets of mental illness in our home and lives. It does this as well as provides a way of assisting us to realize that looking after ourselves personally is not only OK but absolutely necessary to maintain a sense of balance.....even in the face of our loved one's challenges and during times of crisis."

  • "One of the most basic but most useful tools in our toolbox is to help us adjust to the challenges and gifts mental illness brings to our lives."

  • "FWRAP gave me the tools and took so much weight off my shoulders in dealing with my husband's illness and allowed me to focus on what I needed to do to get myself through this difficult time."

  • "Family WRAP workshop made an immense difference in my struggle with my son's mental condition. I felt that I lost myself. The workshop provided structure; each session helped with a different aspect of coping and it gave me the tools to cope better. There was a community where I could talk about anything; cry, listen, learn from others and be supported by all. Both facilitators were excellent, knowledgeable and compassionate. It felt like the only place that I could be myself. I have continued attending PSO's Family Peer Support Groups and find the sessions very helpful as well"

  • "In a time of crisis and uncertainty, FWRAP brings information, education and emotional support in a caring and supportive environment."

  • "I sincerely can say that the 8 weeks of FWRAP were without a doubt an extraordinary experience that provided me with information, tools, awareness to take care of myself and to be able to help and understand the person I am supporting and living with. It was a helpful and wonderful workshop and I recommend it."

About the Authors:

  • Original WRAP was developed by Mary Ellen Copeland and a group of people who had been living with a variety of mental health challenges and who were working hard to feel better and get on with their lives

  • WRAP is based on Mary Ellen Copeland's lived in experience and that of hundreds of consumer-survivors she interviewed

  •  In 1997, several dozen individuals who had experienced serious mental illnesses came together in northern Vermont for an eight-day gathering designed to initiate dialogues on how to improve their emotional and mental health

  • Many of the attendees had been residents of state psychiatric hospitals at various periods in their lives

  • They came together to discuss practical strategies for regaining and sustaining their own wellness. They did not know it at the time but this cadre of intrepid explorers was blazing the trail towards a new international self-help movement for wellness and recovery
